Growing Around

Four Seasons Of Fun

Draft 2

[Author’s Note: This episode is meant to have almost no dialogue.]

[The episode begins at the front door of the Dunn house. We see a little boy dressed as a mailman walk up to the door, a package and clipboard in his hands. He knocks on the door, and waits for a second. The door opens and Sally appears. The mailboy gives her the package and holds up the clipboard. Sally signs the clipboard and goes inside. We cut to the living room where Linda’s watching TV on the couch. Sally enters and gives Linda the package. Linda nods to Sally and opens the package, and the package is revealed to be a scrapbook kit. Sally leaves, and Linda puts the contents of the kit on the coffee table in front of her. She starts by decorating the front of the scrapbook. When she’s finished, we see the words, “Linda’s Scrapbook” on it, along with some pretty decorations. Linda then opens up the scrapbook and sees all the empty pages for her to fill up. Linda starts thinking, but she eventually looks stumped-she’s unsure of what to put in her scrapbook first. Linda sighs in disappointment. Suddenly, we hear Timmy and Sally’s laughter coming from offscreen. This catches Linda’s attention. Linda follows the laughter until she’s standing at the patio door, looking out into the backyard. We cut to Sally and Timmy, who are engaged in a game of tag as light and bouncy music plays. We cut back to Linda, who smiles a little and leans against the patio door, watching her children play. We cut back to the kids. Timmy chases Sally around the backyard. They go around the playground and around the trees, Sally constantly trying to psych Timmy out as they do. As they go around one of the trees, however, Timmy disappears. Sally looks over her shoulder and realizes that Timmy is no longer after her. The bouncy music stops here. Sally approaches the tree cautiously, and looks behind it. Timmy sidles to the front of the tree before Sally can see him however. Sally then checks the front of the tree, causing Timmy to go back behind it. Sally backs away from the tree and turns around, scratching her head in confusion. Timmy sneaks up behind Sally, and tags her.]

Sally: [She gasps, glancing at Timmy, surprised.]

[Timmy blows a raspberry at Sally and runs off. We cut to Linda, who’s laughing a bit at the kids’ antics. She then looks thoughtful and taps her chin as she gets an idea. Linda runs off. She returns a second later with an instant-film camera in her hands. She takes a picture, causing the screen to flash white. We see a few still images, which are the pictures Linda takes. We see more of Sally and Timmy’s game of tag, as well as some other activities, like playing with the playground set. The pictures also show that it had begun to rain, yet the children continue to play and even get dirty. At the last picture, we pan out to see that it is being taped to a page in the scrapbook labeled, “Springtime At The Dunn House”. We cut to Linda, who looks at her work proudly. Just then, a muddy Sally enters the living room with a bouquet of flowers in her hands. She presents it to Linda, and Linda accepts it with a loving smile. She sniffs the flowers, but her nose begins twitch. Linda suddenly sneezes, scattering flower petals everywhere and covering the screen in the process. The petals then fall away, transitioning us to the next scene.]

[We’re in the living room again. This time, Robert, Linda and Sally are there. Surrounding them are a bunch of fans blasting them with air. Robert and Sally are watching TV, Sally enjoying a large bowl of ice cream as they do. Linda is working on her scrapbook. We cut to Linda’s scrapbook and we see that she’s decorating the next page with a summer theme, revealing that it’s now summertime in Summerway. We cut to the TV. It’s showing some generic show. We see the TV for a second before it suddenly shuts off and turns back on. We cut to Robert and Sally, who look confused. We then see the lights flickering. This also gets Linda’s attention and she looks around, puzzled. It’s then that the lights and TV go off completely, and, to the Dunns’ horror, the fans stop. Immediately, they break out in a sweat. Sally is horrified to see that her ice cream is now nothing more than a big, soupy mess. Linda closes her scrapbook and uses it as a fan, but it doesn’t seem to help much. We see the Dunns slowly succumbing to the heat, when Timmy comes in, sipping from a cup of lemonade. He stares at his family for a few seconds, before walking off. We cut to him in the kitchen, using the kitchen sink (we’re unable to see what he’s doing, however). We cut back to the living room. It seems that the other Dunns have passed out from the heat. Timmy enters the room carrying a large water gun. He then blasts his family with a torrent of water, waking them up and causing them to yelp in surprise. When Timmy is satisfied, he runs off, cackling. The other Dunns chase after Timmy, and are led out to the backyard. They see three more water guns on the ground and share a mischievous glance. A water gun fight is then held between the family. We see this fight for a while, before the Dunns all collapse together on the ground, laughing and soaking wet. Linda then gets an idea, and runs back inside. She reappears with her camera, and she sits with the other Dunns. Linda then takes a picture of all four of them together. The screen flashes white and we see the still image that is the picture.]

[We transition into next scene via an autumn leaf sweeping past the camera. We follow the leaf on its journey to the ground (this is in the backyard, by the way). It rests on the ground for a moment, before it’s picked up by Sally. Sally examines the leaf, before walking over to Linda, who’s sitting on the ground nearby with her scrapbook. Sally gives Linda the leaf and Linda tapes it onto her autumn-themed page, much to Sally’s delight. We then hear the sound of autumn leaves being crunched. This gets Sally and Linda’s attention, and they look up. We cut to Timmy, who is a short distance away from Sally and Linda. He’s raking the leaves, a serious expression on his face. He rakes some leaves over to a large pile of them. When the leaves are in the pile, Timmy stands back and looks proud of his work. He then tosses down the rake and backs up. A drumroll kicks in as Timmy prepares himself. He then charges and leaps into the leaf pile, sending leaves everywhere. We then see Timmy lying on the ground, laughing. We cut back to Sally and Linda. Sally gets a mischievous look on her face and walks away. Linda looks after her, confused.]

Sally: [She puts a finger to her lips and winks at Linda.] Shh!

[We cut back to Timmy. He gets up from the ground and shakes out any leaves in his clothes. He picks up the rake and begins raking again, when he pauses, looking at something offscreen curiously. We cut to a small pile of leaves that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere a short distance away. Timmy approaches it carefully, scratching his head. Then, he shrugs, and runs away. He then faces the pile as the drumroll kicks in again. He charges at the pile, but before he can jump into it, Sally pops up from the pile, her arms raised over her head.]

Sally: RAWR!

Timmy: [He skids to a stop.] (Startled) Ahh!

[Timmy runs away in a panic. Sally laughs at her little prank. We cut to Linda, who also laughs a little. We cut to Timmy, who looks at Sally in annoyance. But then, he gets a mischievous look, and goes inside. Time passes—we see “45 minutes later” appear at the bottom of the screen—and Timmy returns, holding something behind his back. We cut to Sally and Linda. Sally’s posing for pictures while Linda takes them. Just then, Timmy approaches them, and presents a slice of pecan pie to Sally. Sally eagerly takes it and starts eating. Timmy then grabs Linda’s arm and leads her back inside, much to Linda’s confusion. We focus on Sally as she continues eating. Suddenly, we hear the sound of squirrels chattering coming from offscreen. Sally looks up, and we cut to a large mob of squirrels in the trees, all of them eyeing Sally and her pie. We cut to Sally, who makes an “Oh crap!” face. She runs away, prompting the squirrels to chase her. We cut to Timmy and Linda. Timmy has taken Linda’s camera and is now taking pictures of Sally being chased, while Linda watches what’s happening in disbelief.]

[We fade in to the next scene. We see a shot of a cloudy sky. Snow gently falls from the sky as gentle music plays (preferably something “wintery”, with sleigh bells and the like). We then hear the sound of boots walking on snow. We pan down to reveal that it’s Sally (dressed in winter clothes, of course) in the backyard. She’s rolling a ball of snow along the ground. It grows until it’s halfway as tall as she is. Sally tries picking the snowball up, but it’s too heavy for her. Robert appears from offscreen, and helps Sally. Sally gives Robert a grateful smile, and they approach a larger ball of snow a short distance away. They rest the medium-sized ball on the large ball, and they both go offscreen. Robert returns with a small ball of snow, and Sally returns with a top hat, a carrot, and some pebbles. Robert rests the small ball on the medium ball, and Sally decorates it. When they’re finished, they stand back and admire their snowman. We cut to Linda, who’s watching them from afar with a pleasant smile. She holds up her camera and takes of picture of them with their snowman. After putting the picture in her coat pocket, Timmy appears and tugs at her sleeve. When he gets Linda’s attention, the boy holds a snowball up to her. He then nods in Robert and Sally’s direction with a mischievous smirk. Linda then smirks as well and takes the snowball, setting down her camera. We cut back to Robert and Sally. Two snowballs come from offscreen and hit them, causing them to yelp in surprise. They look back at Linda and Timmy. Timmy and Linda try to look innocent, whistling and looking around as if nothing happened. We cut to Robert and Sally, who share a glance. We cut back to Timmy and Linda. Two snowballs suddenly hit them from offscreen, and they yelp in surprise. We cut to Robert and Sally, who have taken shelter behind their snowman. They high-five. We cut back to Timmy and Linda. They smile at each other and take shelter behind a tree. An epic snowball fight ensues. Both sides do pretty well until a few well-placed snowballs knock over Sally and Robert’s snowman. Robert and Sally have no choice but to use the bottom of the snowman for protection from Timmy and Linda’s storm of snowballs. Sally and Robert share a glance, unsure of what to do. Suddenly, a lightbulb goes off over Sally’s head. She peeks over the base of the snowman and looks at the tree Timmy and Linda are using as shelter. We see that the branches are covered in snow. She whispers something into Robert’s ear. Robert nods, and Sally sneaks off. We cut back to Timmy and Linda. They’ve stopped their snowball storm, and are waiting for Sally and Robert to fight back. Suddenly, mounds of snow fall on Timmy and Linda, covering them up. Their heads emerge from the snow, and they look surprised. We hear Sally laughing from offscreen. Timmy and Linda look up, and the camera pans up to Sally, who’s sitting on a branch that no longer has snow on it. We cut back to Timmy and Linda. We hear a camera shutter and see a flash of light, and we cut to see Robert taking a picture of Timmy and Linda with Linda’s camera, smirking while he does.]

[We cut to the living room. The Dunn family is there, on the couch and bundled up. Sally and Timmy are sleeping against each other on the couch. Robert and Linda are sitting next to each other, both of them sipping coffee to warm up. Linda is showing Robert her scrapbook.]

Robert: Wow. This is looking pretty good so far, Linda.

Linda: [She smiles.] Thanks, Robbie. It’s my best work all year. I couldn’t have done it without you guys, though. [She then glances over at Timmy and Sally.] There’s never a dull moment in this house, you know?

Robert: [He chuckles.] You’ve got that right.

[We slowly fade to black.]
Here's draft 2 of "Four Episodes Of Fun". I was asked to try and connect the four seasons as opposed to having them be stand-alone events. Here's the result of that. I really like what I did with this draft. But who knows? Maybe I need to do better?

This is definitely a huge improvement over the first draft, I think you did a good job connecting the different scenes :)
