Growing Around Script Audition:

The Kingdom of Cardboardia v3

[The episode begins inside Sally and Timmy’s bedroom. We get a shot of Sally waking up, and then a shot of Timmy waking up. We then get a shot of the two lying there under the covers. Suddenly, they turn and face each other.]

Timmy: It’s Saturday.

Sally: [She nods.] I know.

Timmy: You know what I’m thinking?

Sally: Lucky Cheese’s?

Timmy: Yep.

[Suddenly, the two kids hop out of bed, and get ready. Sally goes to her dresser and throws clothes all over the floor while she looks for an outfit. Timmy goes into Linda’s room, and climbs on her bed, and shakes at her shoulder.]

Timmy: (excitedly) Wake up, Linda!

[Linda slowly wakes up with a groan.]

Linda: (groggily) What is it, Tim?

Timmy: We’re going to Lucky Cheese’s! Come on, get up! We gotta get ready!

Linda: [She gets out of bed.] Lucky Cheese’s is probably not even open yet, Timmy.

Timmy: But we still have to get ready, though. Maybe we can be the first ones in! Come on! Get dressed, already! I’m gonna go wake up Robert.

[Timmy runs out of the room. He rushes downstairs, but sees Robert already up and getting a bowl of cereal in the kitchen. Timmy rushes up to him and yanks his arm.]

Timmy: What are you doing, Robert? There’s no time for breakfast! Go get dressed!

Robert: (confused) Dressed for what?

Timmy: Lucky Cheese’s, of course. Now put down the cereal, and go get dressed.

Robert: [He sighs, and sets the bowl on the counter.] Alright, then.

[We cut to the Dunn family inside the family car. Sally’s at the wheel. Sally tries to start up the car.]

Sally: Huh?

[She tries again, but the car still doesn’t move. Timmy looks concerned.]

Timmy: …Sally?

[Sally looks at Timmy fearfully.]

Sally: I think the car’s broken…

Robert: So…we’re not going to Lucky Cheese’s then?

Timmy: No…

[We cut to the family walking back inside. A disappointed Sally and Timmy sit on the living room couch. Robert and Linda glance at them empathetically.]

Linda: Aw, I’m sorry, you two. We can always go next weekend after the car’s all fixed up.

Sally: (pouty) We wanted to go today!

Timmy: (sadly) Calm down, Sally. Linda’s just trying to help.

Sally: [She looks down.] I know. Sorry, Linda.

Linda: It’s ok, Sally. Not being able to go to Lucky Cheese’s doesn’t mean our Saturday’s ruined. [She gets skeptical looks from the kids.] There’s plenty of stuff we can do today.

[Sally gets up from the couch.]

Sally: I’m gonna go play with my dolls… [She goes upstairs.]

Timmy: I’m gonna go call the auto shop… [He walks off-screen.]

[Linda sighs, and looks at Robert.]

Linda: I wish there was something we could do.

Robert: Yeah…As annoying as it is to be dragged to that place every Saturday, I’d rather have that then those two being miserable. But what can we do?

[Linda puts a hand to her chin.]

Linda: I remember something like this happening to me as a kid. But I had a back-up plan. Maybe this’ll work now with Sally and Timmy.

Robert: What is it?

Linda: It’s something I called, “The Kingdom of Cardboardia”.

Robert: Oh, I see. Some sort of make believe thing, right?

Linda: [She nods.] I’ll explain the details while we set it up. We’re going to need a lot of cardboard boxes.
[We cut to later. Linda is standing in front of Sally and Timmy at the front door of the house.]

Linda: Alright. Before I open this door, I need you guys to put [She pulls out some blindfolds from behind her back.] these on.

Timmy: [He cocks a brow.] Why?

Linda: You guys have to use your imagination in order to go to this place.

Sally: Use our imagination? I can do that. [She takes a blindfold and puts it on.] Ok, I’m ready.

Linda: [She glances at Timmy.] Well, Tim?

Timmy: Oh, alright. [He takes the blindfold and puts it on.] Now what?

Linda: Let me tell you guys about this place, and to do that, I need to put on my best narrator voice. [She clears her throat.] (Narrator-esque) Imagine a great kingdom where everything is made of cardboard. The houses, businesses, and even the royal castle is all made of cardboard. This kingdom is called The Kingdom Of Cardboardia, and it’s ruled by a king and a queen. The king is an eleven-year-old boy named Timmy, and the queen is a nine-year-old girl named Sally.

Timmy: (confused) Hold on. Sally’s a queen? But...aren’t they evil?

Sally: (proudly) Not Queen Sally.

Linda: Alright, let’s go.

[Linda opens the door, ushering the kids outside. We see a bunch of cardboard boxes littered all over the front yard with drawings of houses, buildings, trees, and shrubs. In the midst of these boxes is a small collection of boxes set up in a way that resembles a castle. A large box is set up a short distance away from all the other boxes, and is closed up, hiding the contents inside.]

Linda: Ok, you two. Take those blindfolds off.

[We cut to a black screen. We then transition into the next shot via one of the children (we’ll say Timmy) taking off their blindfold. We see through Timmy’s P.O.V., and what the children see is very different from what we saw before. Instead of cardboard boxes on the front lawn, the children see rows and rows of houses and businesses made entirely of cardboard, all of them surrounding a massive and magnificent cardboard castle. The boxes with rocks and trees have become a lush forest that rests beside the kingdom. We cut to Timmy and Sally looking around in awe. Their outfits have changed into royal robes that kings and queens would wear. Beside them is Linda, who’s dressed in an outfit similar to the one worn by The Pagemaster. She smiles down at them.]

Linda: Nice place you’ve got here. Now, would you two like to go to the castle?

Sally: (excitedly) Boy, would we! [She grabs Timmy and Linda’s hand as she rushes down the road in the direction of the castle.] Let’s go!

[We cut to Sally opening the doors of the castle, stepping inside. Timmy and Linda follow behind soon after. The two walk down a corridor, where tapestries are hanging. One tapestry has a great dragon on it, and is depicted destroying a city. This will be important later. It isn’t long before they arrive in a throne room. In the throne room are two cardboard thrones, and resting on those thrones are a pair of gorgeous crowns, two swords with blades of silver, and silver shields. The siblings approach the thrones, pick up the items, and put them on. Timmy looks pretty confused.]

Timmy: [He turns to Linda and holds up the sword and shield.] What are these for?

Linda: Oh, you’ll need those for when the ferocious dragon, Robert, comes.

[Sally and Timmy look at each other excitedly.]

Timmy: (excitedly) A dragon?

Linda: [She looks grim.] Yes, and it’s planning to take over your kingdom as we speak.

Timmy: [He then looks alarmed.] What!? He can’t do that! We have to stop him!

Linda: The only way you can do that is by slaying him.

[Sally gasps, covering her mouth with her hands and looking horrified. But Timmy looks determined.]

Timmy: Then let’s slay that dragon. [He turns to Sally.] Come on, my queen!

Sally: (unsure) But…

Timmy: [He pushes Sally towards the corridor.] No “buts”, Queen Sally. We’ve got a dragon to slay.

[Sally reluctantly allows herself to be led outside the castle. Linda follows them outside, and Timmy turns to her.]

Timmy: Can you take us to the dragon, Linda?

Linda: [She chuckles.] Of course. [She then snaps her fingers, and suddenly takes the form of a brown mare (who has lighter brown streaks in her mane like Linda’s hair does).] (Mentally) Climb on.

[Sally temporarily forgets her sadness and excitedly hugs the horse.]

Sally: Aw! So pretty!

[Horse!Linda kneels down to let the children climb onto her back. Then, with a neigh, Horse!Linda races through the kingdom, and into the forest with the children riding on her back. Horse!Linda goes on until she comes before a clearing. At the end of this clearing is a mountain with a cave in it. A pair of large, brown eyes are staring at the three from the cave. There’s suddenly a growl, and a great, brown, spiky dragon emerges from the cave with foreboding music in the background. We see Horse!Linda, Timmy, and Sally, looking up in awe at the offscreen dragon as his shadow falls over them. We cut to the dragon, who glares down at the horse and the siblings. The dragon opens his mouth and lets out a terrifying roar.]

Dragon!Robert: (in a low, growly voice) Cardboardia will be mine!

[He then prepares to approach Horse!Linda, Timmy, and Sally, but sudden laughter causes him to stop in his tracks. We suddenly cut to reality, and see that the scary dragon is actually Robert dressed in a ridiculous dragon costume and trying to make himself look scary. Sally and Timmy are riding on Linda’s back (who’s crawling around on her hands and knees) and carrying cardboard swords and shields. The children are both laughing, Timmy laughing so hard that he falls off Linda’s back. Robert looks embarrassed. Linda looks at the kids seriously.]

Linda: (urgently) Guys! This is no laughing matter! Are you really going to let the ferocious dragon take over Cardboardia?

[We return back to the kids’ imagination.]

Timmy: [He leans against Horse!Linda, trying to hold back his laughter.] No, we’re not.

Sally: [She giggles.] Yeah, we’re gonna lock him up and keep him as a pet. He’s so cute!

[Timmy gives Sally a surprised look.]

Timmy: A pet? Oh, no, my queen. He’s dangerous.

Sally: [She shakes her head.] Nuh-uh, he’s just misunderstood. Just because he’s big and kinda scary doesn’t mean he can’t be nice. [She turns to Dragon!Robert.] What do you say, Mr. Dragon. How’s about you be our friend, join our kingdom, and rule with us as the Royal Dragon?

[We cut to Dragon!Robert.]

Dragon!Robert: [He tilts his head] (Unsure) You want me to be your friend? …No one’s ever asked me to be friends with them before. Maybe I could--

Timmy: [He swings his sword impatiently.] No way! He might backstab us! We have to destroy him.

[Dragon!Robert and Horse!Linda share a glance. Horse!Linda winks at the dragon, and rears onto her hind legs. The children fall off her back with panicked yelps. Horse! Linda returns to her human form, except the staff she previously carried is now a large sword. Linda smirks down at the children evilly.]

Timmy: (angrily) Hey, what was that for?

Linda: You silly children. I’ve been working for the dragon all along, and I’m going to help him destroy you.

[Sally gasps, and looks at the dragon with a look of betrayal on her face.]

Sally: Is this true, Robert?

[We cut to Dragon!Robert.]

Dragon!Robert: Er…yes…[He then sneers.] (Evilly) Yes, it’s true.

[Sally glares at the dragon, before raising her sword and charging at him.]

Sally: (loudly) Down with the dragon!

[The dragon lowers his head and tries to snag her with his teeth, but with a jump and a growl, Sally latches onto the spike on his nose. Sally raises her sword and prepares to stab Dragon!Robert’s flesh. We cut to reality, and we see Sally sitting on a fallen Robert’s chest, hitting him repeatedly in the face with the cardboard sword. We cut back to the fantasy. We see Linda rushing after Sally (while we hear Dragon!Robert’s cries of pain in the background). But Timmy blocks her way, holding his sword. He glares at Linda.]

Timmy: Oh, no you don’t. I’m taking you out.

[They begin to have a swordfight. They strike at each other, causing loud, metallic sounds to occur when their blades meet. But Timmy gets the upper hand by tripping Linda, and making her fall. Timmy sits on her chest, and raises his blade.]

Linda: (terrified) No! Wait! Please!

Timmy: (angrily) You were gonna destroy our kingdom. You have to be destroyed.

[Timmy is about to finish Linda off, but the sound of laughter causes him to stop. He looks back, and we cut to Dragon!Robert standing over Sally, his claws glowing with a yellow, magical aura. Sally is surrounded by the same aura, and is rolling around on the ground, hugging herself and laughing. We cut to reality, and we see that Robert is actually tickling her. We cut to the fantasy again.]

Dragon!Robert: Ha! No silly human can withstand my tickling powers!

[We cut back to Tommy and Linda. Linda smirks and lifts a hand. It glows the same yellow aura, and Timmy is suddenly surrounded by it. He, too, falls over and starts laughing. We see reality again. Linda and Robert and tickling Timmy and Sally. Walking on the sidewalk in the background is a little boy and his mom. They stop to watch. We cut to the fantasy again, and we see the children still trapped in the magical auras.]

Timmy: (between laughs) Queen Sally! Ha! We have to get up! Hee! Hee! They’ll take over if we--Ha!--don’t!

[We cut to Sally, who struggles against the tickling magic. She picks up her fallen sword, raises it, and flings it at Dragon!Robert’s chest. Before we can see a gory impact, we cut to reality. More people are gathering on the sidewalk to watch the events in the background. Sally is stabbing Robert in the chest, right where his heart is, with the cardboard sword.]

Robert: Ack! [He staggers back.] (Over-dramatically) You…you killed me. [He falls to his knees.] I’m dying…

[We cut back to the fantasy, and we see the dragon collapsing with a great thud. His eyes close and he falls still. The aura around Sally disappears. Sally looks triumphant.]

Sally: I did it! I beat the dragon!

[We cut to Linda and Timmy. The magic aura has left Timmy, and Linda looks shocked. Timmy beams.]

Timmy: Great job, my queen!

Linda: No! [She glares at Sally.] How dare you kill my dragon!

[Sally turns to Linda and points to her.]

Sally: No, how dare YOU try to take over our kingdom. Now go away if you know what’s good for you.

[Linda suddenly smirks, and grabs Timmy. She snatches his sword, and holds the blade against his neck. Timmy and Sally gasp.]

Linda: (sinisterly) I’m not going anywhere. But the king will if you don’t surrender to me.

Timmy: (defiantly) Don’t listen to her, Queen Sally. Fight her, or Cardboardia becomes hers!

Linda: Just give up. There’s nothing you can do.

[Sally taps her chin in thought, but then her eyes widen. She smirks at Linda.]

Sally: There IS something I can do, and that’s magic. And I’m going to bring the dragon back with magic.

Linda: [She gasps.] No!

[Sally approaches the fallen Dragon!Robert. She touches his snout, and closes her eyes.]

Sally: [Her hand glows with a green aura.] Come back, Robert. Come back as my friend.

[Dragon!Robert’s eyes snap open, and he gets up from the ground, his wounds magically healed. With a low purr, the dragon nuzzles Sally, and Sally hugs the dragon’s snout with a giggle.]

Dragon!Robert: (politely) How may I serve you, Queen Sally?

Sally: [She points to Linda with a confident look on her face.] Chase that evil lady out of our kingdom please.

Dragon!Robert: [He glares at Linda.] Yes, my queen.

[Dragon!Robert lets out a roar, and with a flap of his wings, and takes to the sky and flies at Linda. Linda screams, drops the sword, and runs as the dragon chases her. We cut back to reality (the throng is much bigger now), and we see Timmy hugging Sally.]

Timmy: You did it, my queen! You saved Cardboardia!

Sally: And I have a new pet dragon, too.

[Robert and Linda join them.]

Linda: (narrator-esque) And the king, the queen, and the dragon all lived happily ever after.

[The throng in the background suddenly break out into applause and cheers, startling the Dunns and getting their attention.]

Timmy: [He leans close to Sally.] (Whispering) When’d all these guys show up?

[Sally shrugs. The throng disperses after that, many of the children and adults commenting on how entertaining and fun it was to watch the Dunns playing. One kid stays behind, dressed as an auto repair man.]

Auto Repair Boy: [He applauds as tears roll down his cheeks.] That was amazing.

[We cut to the Dunns, who all share a glance.]

Timmy: Thanks.

Auto Repair Boy: [He sniffles and dries his face.] Oh, yeah. Did someone call about a broken car?

Timmy: [He raises his hand.] Oh that was me. [He beckons for the boy to follow him and starts walking to the garage.] This way.

[Timmy and the boy go, and Sally frowns. Robert and Linda notice this.]

Linda: (concerned) What’s wrong, Sally?

Sally: The car’s being fixed?

Linda: Well, yeah. It has to be fixed if you guys want to take us to Lucky Cheese’s next week.

Sally: [She shakes her head.] Actually, after today, maybe another weekend without Lucky Cheese’s won’t be so bad.

Robert: So you’re going to tell that boy to leave?

Sally: No, he can fix the car. But if Timmy won’t let us play Cardboardia again next weekend, the car’s gonna get broken again.

[Linda chuckles.]

Linda: Oh, I don’t think that’ll be necessary, Sally.

[We cut to the auto repair boy and Timmy in the garage. While the boy is working, Timmy is talking about Cardboardia.]

Timmy: So, I was thinking next weekend, we could have evil Linda come back, but this time, she could be a dragon. I think I’m gonna give myself some powers, too. Oh! Maybe I can turn myself into a dragon and have big showdown…

[The episode fades to an end as Timmy talks.]
This is the third draft for The Kingdom Of Cardboardia. It has a different execution, with the children's fantasies and reality both coming into play, unlike the other two drafts. This idea came from CatchphraseCartoons, who deserves all the credit for this idea.I just turned it into a script. This draft may be a bit long for an 11 minute episode,though...
